A Medieval Concept Of Duties Sans Rights

In the tribal areas of Pakistan bordering Afganistan, a lean and pale middle-aged women was walking briskly towards the nearby mountain to collect fuel wood. She was in hurry because after the completion of this task  she was to fetch clean drinking water from a spring two kilometers away from her home and to wash the clothesof the whole of family.Later in the afternoon, her most important  duty was to water her small field and to fetch some vegetables to cook food to be served at night and the following morning. At home her six hungry children were also anxiously waiting for her return, especially the small six months old baby who was crying as usual to be breast-fed.

She collected the fuel wood and started walking down the narrow path of the steep slop of the high mountain with the heavy bundle of wood on her hand. In the middle of the Mountain she slipped and fell down from the high rocky slope. She expired at the spot with her eyes wide open, fixed on to the sky waiting God for help.

In a nearby village, the sound of a loudspeaker was echoing in the valley. A politician was congratulating the people of this area for getting for the first time the right to the cost vote, in the 50 years of the creation of the country. He was speaking amid cheering and clapping saying that after achieveing this milestone, equal rights would now be given to woman; they will no more be killed for honour and prestige; they will not die of malnutrition and pragnancy related matters; they will be economically empowered; they will be given education; their share in the countrys devolopment will be recognised and they will be given their due rights. But the dead body of that ill-fated woman down in the foothill could not hear these high claims, and bombastic rhetoric of the politican who was speaking to other men (males) like him, responsible for her (females) death. Her wide open eyes were wondering as for how long her poor lot will suffer this fate and were amased at the hypocrisy of the politicians never ending broken promises in the broad day light, who was only intersted in his re-electionto the national assembly.
